Summer Fun 2008

All’s very well on the Compost Heap with George as usual drawing some brilliant new characters and designs. We’re also in the process of finalising some fantastic additional new products for 2008 – watch this space or this site.

As usual pull on your wellies, get out there and enjoy the smell of the glorious outdoors. Maybe even consider becoming a member of GuerillaGardening.org. Being a Guerrilla Gardener means you secretly garden a public or private piece of scrub or unsightly land without permission. Apparently alot of people have been confused about exactly what guerrilla gardening is (King Kong Style). I’m told Guerrilla gardening is the "illicit cultivation of someone else's land." So there you go. Sounds very un-British and a lot of hard work – will it catch on? Gardening gets cool, the graffiti mob of the Compost Heap.

Last year Summer passed us by, but so far this year has been great with lovely weather. Added to this the excitement of changing colours and summer flowers. The garden is definitely alive and well.

Jobs for Summer should include a bit of weeding and watering. This paves the way for that favourite weekend treat of checking whether fruit has arrived (delicious Strawberries plentiful here - drop in if you want some!) and eating all your hard work hopefully. At the same time, it might be an idea to mow the lawn. If you’re a lawn person, the hard work aerating the lawn in the Autumn should be paying off with lovely stripes appearing, especially good for an evening of croquet.

But all that apart – get outdoors wearing your favourite old shirt for walks or relaxing in glorious English sunshine full of life.

It’s also a great time for getting children into gardening. There’s no better way to reinforce the lifecycle of plants than to encourage the collection of seeds, especially from Sunflowers and wildflowers. Be sure to label your packets of seeds collected. Next Spring you’ll delight them by planting their Magic Beans and watching the results grow and grow!

Keep digging and try not to soil those trousers.

Thanks Shallot for continuing to support the Compost Heap. Pip pip for now.
